Sarah Louise Heath Palin (born February 11, 1964) is the governor of Alaska and the Republican vice-presidential nominee in the 2008 United States presidential election. She was a member of the Wasilla, Alaska, city council from 1992 to 1996 and mayor from 1996 to 2002. After an unsuccessful campaign for lieutenant governor of Alaska in 2002, she chaired the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission from 2003 to 2004. She was elected governor of Alaska in November 2006 by defeating the incumbent governor in the Republican primary and a former two-term Democratic governor in the general election. She is the youngest person to have been elected to the position, and Alaska’s first female governor. On August 29, 2008, Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain announced he had chosen Sarah Palin as his running mate. She was nominated at the 2008 Republican National Convention in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Palin is the first woman and the first Alaskan to run on the Republican Party’s presidential ticket.
Twitter purchased Summize these days, in order to improve the search of the Twitter network, for relevant topics.

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates (otherwise known as tweets) which are text-based posts, ranging up to 140 characters long, via SMS, mobile, or Twitter’s web site

Twitter blog confirmed this aquisition: “We’re excited to announce that Twitter has acquired Summize—an extraordinary search tool and an amazing group of engineers. All five Summize engineers will move to San Francisco, CA and take jobs at Twitter, Inc. This is an important step forward in the evolution of Twitter as a service and as a company.”

Summize offers an API so other products and services can filter the constant queue of updates in a variety of ways. The Summize service and API will be merged with our own and integrated under the Twitter brand.

Twitter can connect groups of people in critical situations, and there are a lot of such examples. The American Red Cross uses Twitter to exchange minute-to-minute information about local disasters, including statistics and directions.

Replacing the thousands of social networks with a single big social network? No, but a golden mine, maybe the best service of Google for me and my 287 web sites and tens of blogs, every one with its own users till now.

So, from now on any of us can have his own social network, using Google Friend Connect. In order to become a social site, you have to add a snippet of code, picking and choosing from built-in functionality like user registration, invitations, members gallery, message posting, and reviews, as well as third-party applications built by the OpenSocial developer community. This way, your visitors will be able to see, invite, and interact with new friends, or, using secure authorization APIs, with existing friends from social sites on the web, including Facebook, Google Talk, hi5, orkut, Plaxo, and more.

“Google Friend Connect is about helping the ‘long tail’ of sites become more social,” said David Glazer, a director of engineering at Google. “Many sites aren’t explicitly social and don’t necessarily want to be social networks, but they still benefit from letting their visitors interact with each other. That used to be hard. Fortunately, there’s an emerging wave of social standards — OpenID, OAuth, OpenSocial, and the data access APIs published by Facebook, Google, MySpace, and others. Google Friend Connect builds on these standards to let people easily connect with their friends, wherever they are on the web, making ‘any app, any site, any friends’ a reality.”

Google promises for site owners a better traffic (people will bring their friends with them and can opt-in to publish their activities on those sites back into their social network, attracting even more visitors), an increase in user engagement (more interesting content and richer social experiences by using OpenSocial applications), and less work by implementing social components without hiring a programming team or becoming a social network.

TechCrunch give us details after Erick Shonfeld talked with Google engineering director David Glazer: ” …if you go to a Website that is part of Friend Connect, you will be able to sign in under your Facebook, Google Talk, hi5, Orkut, or Plaxo IDs (you choose which one you want to sign in under, with more options coming). Then you authorize the site to go out and retrieve your friend’s list from that network. Any of those friends who also happen to be members of the site you are on will then show up and you can interact with them.”

Let’s start!, I told myself. And I pushed the button “Sign-up for preview release“. A new window, with an online form. I filled it and pushed the Submit button. But the preview release is just a short notice: “Something bad happened. Don’t worry, though. The Spreadsheets Team has been notified and we’ll get right on it.”

I tried several times, with Firefox as well as with Internet Explorer. Same result. Very beta!

(See the full Press Release)

Finally, Google decided on the indexing of the feeds. The policy is now to index the multimedia podcast feeds only, as no HTML page has the same content or they have more complete item descriptions than the associated HTML page.

There are two main reasons to exclude the common feeds from the Google’s search results:

Feeds increase the likelihood that users see duplicate search results (because of this, some webmasters block off access to the robots to avoid them indexing the pages that have these data feeds)

Users clicking on a feed may miss valuable content available only in the HTML page.

An alternative for the old search for the feeds it is Google Reader or iGoogle.

For the owners of podcast feeds that do not want it to be indexed, they can comply with <a href="http://publisher.yahoo.com/rss_guide/faq.php" onclick="s_objectID="http://publisher.yahoo.com/rss_guide/faq.php_1";return this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true"> Yahoo Guidelines, or, if they use <a href="http://www.feedburner.com/" onclick="s_objectID="http://www.feedburner.com/_1";return this.s_oc?this.s_oc(e):true"> Feedburner they can easily set this up within Feedburner.

SixApart finalize their GPL version of the Movable Type as an open source, Movable Type Open Source 4.0, with the help of their community. This means you can freely modify, redistribute, and use Movable Type for any purpose you choose.

Movable Type Open Source has every feature of Movable Type 4.0, as well as:

Several new minor improvements and bug fixes.

All plugins, themes, templates, designs, and APIs that work with MT4 work with MTOS. MTOS also works with other Six Apart open source technologies such as memcached.

Built-in support for an unlimited number of blogs, an unlimited number of authors, and sign-in with OpenID, with no plugins needed.

There’s a public Subversion repository for getting the MTOS code and nightly builds.

Once there are stable public builds, those downloads will be on movabletype.org as well.

You can find out how to contribute to the MTOS project and the MT community at movabletype.org.

MTOS support is provided by other members of the community.

Movable Type Open Source is being released under the standard GPL license.

The company Corbis is offering for bloggers access to its stock photography, in exchange of some ads that it will be embedded into these images. The photos will either include an ad overlay on part of the image, or embedded advertising that pops up when a Web user runs a cursor over the picture.

The photos will be accessed via a web link from the site PicApp.com, now in a test phase.

Corbis says that the pictures are tracked and they are able to find out when the pictures are used illegally.
