Compulsive buying is an emotional disorder characterized by multiple purchases of objects, usually having little or no need for the individual. This disorder affects approximately 1.1% of the world population. The compulsive buying appears in the nosology in the second half of the nineteenth century and the term is listed in 1960 under the term of “extravagance”.
In some countries compulsive buying disorder is recognized in a legal way, which means that it is possible to recognize the disease.
Compulsive buying is frequently comorbid with mood, anxiety, substantial abuse and eating disorders. The compulsive buying occurs during adolescence, early twenties, and is usually chronic . Compulsive buying is similar to hoarding and mania.
Symptoms of compulsive buying and are classified and include :
- Invasive and disturbing thoughts regarding purchases or impulse shopping behavior and inappropriate;
- Purchases exceeding the financial capacity ;
- Frequent purchases of unnecessary items or shopping for longer than expected .
