London is one of the world capitals of classical and pop/rock music. The city is the seat of one of the four major record companies, EMI Group, and countless musicians, bands, orchestras and music professionals.

Classical music

There are five professional orchestras based in London: the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Many other orchestras are also located in the city: the orchestra of the age of Enlightenment, the London Sinfonietta, the London Mozart Players and English Chamber Orchestra. The culmination of the classic season occurs every year in the summer with The Proms, a series of 70 concerts of classical music at the Royal Albert Hall.

Opera and ballet

London has two major opera houses: the Royal Opera House and the Coliseum Theatre. The Royal Ballet and English National Ballet occur at the Royal Opera House, Sadler’s Wells Theatre and the Royal Albert Hall.

Pop/rock music

London is home to many venues pop/rock such as Earls Court and Wembley Arena, the Carling Brixton Academy or the Hammersmith Apollo, and countless more intimate rooms. Many resident artists in London and the surrounding Home Counties. In the city were open the first Hard Rock Cafe and the famous Abbey Road Studios.

As the main conurbation in the UK, London has played a major role in the birth of the various currents of urban music, Punk and electronic music, such as drum and bass, garage, grime and dubstep. Many artists of British hip-hop also live in London.

In 2006, DJ Magazine published a survey of 600 international DJs who established London home to three of the best nightclubs in the world: Fabric, The End and Turnmills. In 2007, when a new survey, the Fabric was ranked second and The End fourth; six London clubs are in the first fifty places.
